Student Work Portfolio

 Continuous Contours, Continuous Threads
These two works were completed by students in the Minor 1 course at Newton North High School.  Students first were introduced to the concept of bling contour drawing.  Students completed self portraits, which were then transferred onto fabric.
Students were taught about the history of embroidery and its role in historical and contemporary art practices. Each student completed their portrait employing a variety of stitches to convey their inward personality.

Perceiving Perspectives
This lesson was done in the Art Major 3 class at Newton North High School.  Students began assignment with a black and white image of their choice that resonated with them.  This first image became the setting for the drawing.  Students also had to incorporate their self, and two items that represent them in some way.
Students were expected to convey a sense of depth using perspective, and conducted a mid session silent written critique. Each student completed a self assessment rubric focusing on craftsmanship, composition, care, and concept which was turned in along with the finished work.

Looking At and In Books
The Art Major 1 and Art Minor 1 students each completed this assignment through a variety of stages.  Before beginning the works featured above, each unfinished, students were engaged in color mixing exercises in order to understand color theory.  Next students completed multiple thumbnail sketches in conjunction with brainstorming maps in order to execute compositions that were interesting to the eye as well as descriptive of an emotion or narrative of their favorite book.

Fanciful Flowers
Students from the New Art Center learned about the history of quilting while practicing advanced hand and machine sewing techinques.  Stitches covered were blanket, running, back, various blinds, and french knots.  Students use these techniques in future projects to demonstrate understanding of process and final results.
